The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club has always had an extensive array of both ocean and land based recreational activities. Recently, this broad spectrum of summer programs has been enhanced by the launching of a new “Kayak/Scull Club.”
The beautiful harbor environment of the Yacht Club provides a perfect location for this serene sport. Kayaking is a sport that can be enjoyed on many levels, by beginners and experts alike. The physical activity of kayaking provides vigorous exercise, while the ocean transit invigorates the mind and spirit.
We are pleased that there are now some on-site kayak racks at the Club. If you are interested in renting space on the kayak rack, please contact the Club Manager to reserve your spot and get the fee schedule.
The group comes together for guided trips and group outings. Members can either use their kayaks or rent from Tidal Transit. The fees will vary depending on the length of the guided trip and whether one is providing their own kayak. Kayakers, of course, can arrange informal trips among ourselves to take advantage of our unique and wonderful setting.
Trips are scheduled every two weeks, usually on Mondays and range in length from 2 - 4 hours. We try to offer a variety of excursions ranging from easy coastline explorations to more challenging island trips as well as participating in the Southport Rowgatta. Past trips have included visits to Little Green Island, Capitol Island, Burnt Island, as well as being treated to a gourmet lunch hosted by Diann and Bob ring after paying a special visit to their house. Information regarding upcoming trips are sent to interested members via email. If anyone would like to receive these emails they can contact Sharma Schacknow (info in the roster).
Safety will always be paramount during our trips. Everyone that participates will wear a life jacket and be cognizant of safety rules.
BHYC has always been the premier Maine venue for sailing and motor-powered boating, now with our “Kayak/Scull Club” we add people-powered ocean voyaging to the mix.
Scheduled outings are on the BHYC Online Calendar, or you can contact Sharma Schacknow (info in the roster) for more information or to join the email list to receive up-to-date trip announcements. If you're interested in making BHYC a part of your summer in Maine, contact us about becoming a member.
