BHYC enjoys a full and fun racing season. Summers in Maine are short, but we get the most out of it that we can. In addition to a Thursday and Saturday racing series, you can find a regatta or race for any sailboat and racing class. Most races and regattas sponsored by BHYC are open to both BHYC members and non-members. From the fun Around Southport Race to the annual Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta, we hope you will will come race with us this summer.
2016 'Round Southport Race
July 3, 2016
This fun race between BHYC sailors and the Southport Yacht Club was resurrected in 2011 when the original trophy, a black garbage pail, was located.
The Southport Yacht Club and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club are proud to present the annual ‘Round Southport Race. This race returned in 2011 with a new format recapturing the essence of the original race that was held from 1968 to 1982. While we can no longer race through the Townsend Gut, this race does go around most of the island.
The ‘Round Southport race is fun race for boats of all sizes often drawing 20 or more boats. Past participants have ranged from a Herreshoff 12½ (Doughdish) and Club 420 to a Morris M52.
The race is a 9.55nm Pursuit Race; there is a cruising class and a racing class. In addition to the individual boats competing, the top three finishing boats from BHYC and SYC will determine the club that wins the coveted Trash Can Trophy.
For the first time ever this race will count as a GMORA Race Day and will be scored for the Boothbay Region and towards overall trophies. This is a fun and challenging race for sailors of all ages.
Congratulations to the Southport Yacht Club for claiming the prestigious garbage pail in 2015!
